This screenplay, “Call Me Evan,” was entered into Expression 2016′s written work category by Alex Smith
INTRODUCTORY SCENE:
In a Cemetery; it is four o’clock in the evening. One of the main protagonists, MARCEL KINGSTON is standing in front of a grave. He is mourning the loss of his dear friend EVAN MAGUIRE while holding a single red rose in his hand. A voiceover narration comes from Marcel.
MARCEL: (Voiceover) Never have I ever thought that this moment would come. I never thought that I’d be visiting the grave of someone who was once a close friend of mine. You could say we were best friends, perhaps even lovers. But now I stand in front of the grave of Mr Evan Maguire who was taken away so young. I will miss you forever Evan Stanley Maguire…
[A single tear rolls down his cheek as he places the rose down onto Evan’s grave. A close-up shot shows Marcel’s despair at losing Evan.]
MARCEL: You didn’t have to live like this Evan. We will keep on fighting for what we believe in. Who cares what the others think. This is our life! Your life was fragile.
[The scene fades out and changes.]
EXT. 1:
SIX MONTHS EARLIER in the town of HINDLESBURY; it is a fine day and everyone is moving about. Everyone is dressed up appropriately and almost conservatively. MARY KINGSTON is walking through the streets when she enters a COBBLER SHOP.
The scene switches to in the COBBLER SHOP.
MARY: Good morning Sebastian.
[SEBASTIAN appears.]
SEBASTIAN: Nice to see you again Miss Kingston, how are you this morning?
MARY: I’m very well thank-you.
SEBASTIAN: And how’s that little family of yours?
MARY: Annette is doing well but something seems to be bothering Marcel.
SEBASTIAN: Oh, how so?
MARY: He hasn’t been very happy lately and I don’t know why.
SEBASTIAN: Maybe he needs a good church service.
MARY: It is Sunday tomorrow. He can get a good cleansing then.
SEBASTIAN: I’m sure he can be healed through a good cleansing session. What can I get for you today Miss Kingston?
MARY: My children need new church shoes; something black and sophisticated but not too comfortable.
SEBASTIAN: Right this way Miss K.
[They walk in a different direction and the scene changes.]
INT. 2:
At the KINGSTON RESIDENCE; ANNETTE is doing some bible study at the dining table. MARCEL enters the kitchen and opens the fridge.
ANNETTE: Momma says we aren’t allowed any food otherwise we’ll spoil our dinner.
MARCEL: I’m getting some juice.
ANNETTE: Why have you been down so lately?
MARCEL: What makes you think I’ve been down?
ANNETTE: You barely come out of your room anymore and it’s only on rare occasions that you communicate with anyone else.
MARCEL: I’ve had a lot on my mind.
[He exits as MARY enters.]
MARY: I’m home darlings.
ANNETTE: Hi Momma.
MARY: How’s your bible study coming along?
ANNETTE: It’s coming along great. I’m halfway through the book of Psalms.”
MARY: That’s the longest book in the bible. Good on you. How about Marcel’s studies?
ANNETTE: Marcel has been spending a lot of time in his room. I don’t think he’s studying.
MARY: I’ll go and see him.
[Mary walks away and the scene changes.]
INT. 3:
In MARCEL’S BEDROOM; MARCEL is sitting at his desk in an unhappy mood. MARY knocks on the door.
MARY: Marcel can I come in?
MARCEL: Sure.
[Mary enters his room. She sits down on his bed.]
MARY: Has something been bothering you son?
MARCEL: You wouldn’t understand.
MARY: Aw sweetie. I’m your Mother I think I understand you pretty well.
MARCEL: I feel like I don’t belong in this town. I feel like I don’t belong in this society.
MARY: I think you need to visit the church. To our luck it’s the Sabbath tomorrow.
MARCEL: I don’t belong with the church.
MARY: That’s just the devil talking. You’re a valid member of the church of God.
MARCEL: Then why don’t I feel like it?
MARY: Because it has been a week since you’ve attended a service. You’ll feel better tomorrow.
[She kisses him on the forehead and exits his bedroom. The scene switches.]
INT. 4:
The following day at THE CHURCH OF ST. SIMON; MARY and her children are attending the Sunday sermon. There are other people looking for seats on the benches. A woman named STARR JULESON enters the building with her daughter KATIE. She walks over near where Mary and her children are sitting.
STARR: Excuse me, is this seat taken?
[Mary turns to her.]
MARY: It isn’t. Feel free to sit there.
[Starr smiles at her.]
STARR: That’s very kind of you, thank-you.
[She sits down next to them.]
STARR: I’m Starr by the way.
MARY: Nice to meet you Starr, I’m Mary and these are my children Annette and Marcel.
STARR: In that case I’d like you to meet my sister Katie.
KATIE: Hi.
[Mary notices a young man hiding behind Starr.]
MARY: Who’s the young fella hiding behind you?
STARR: That’s my brother Zachariah. He’s very shy and doesn’t like it when I introduce him to new people. Why don’t you come and say hi Zachariah?
[Zachariah shows himself from behind Starr. He is wearing a bandage wrapped around his head which Mary notices.]
MARY: Oh my. Are you alright sweetie?
[He pulls back.]
STARR: He’s had a rough couple of years. We found out only three years ago that he was terminally ill. We thought he wouldn’t have long to live.
MARY: I guess heaps of prayer helped Zachariah live a fuller life.
[Starr smiles.]
STARR: I guess it did.
[The Pastor stands up in front of the church.]
PASTOR: Good morning everyone.
[They all quieten down.]
PASTOR: I would like to begin the sermon this morning by welcoming all our new members of God’s glorious family and any visitors from out of town. Today’s sermon will be about relationships and how God views them. I would like to read you two passages from the book of Leviticus which are focused around a particular type of relationship. It’s not a mother-daughter relationship, nor a father-son relationship. I’m talking about a same-gender relationship.
[He flips the bible to the pages.]
PASTOR: (Reading) “Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is an abomination…” I would like to emphasize this with Leviticus chapter 20 verse 13; “If a man lies with mankind as he leith with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death: their blood shall be upon them.”
[The audience clap for his sermon as Zachariah covers his face. The scene changes.]
EXT. 5:
Outside, in front of the church; there is a small barbecue going on. The sermon attendees are all chatting outside. MARY is talking to the PASTOR.
MARY: (To the Pastor) I must say Pastor, that sermon you delivered was very empowering. Never have I ever agreed more strongly with what you said. I’m intrigued.
PASTOR: I’m only giving the people what God wants.
MARY: I don’t think he’d want it any other way.
[The scene switches to over on one of the church steps; Zachariah is sitting down when Marcel approaches him.]
MARCEL: Is this seat taken?
EVAN: Go ahead. Nobody wants to sit next to me anyway.
MARCEL: How come?
EVAN: Because I’m a freak.
[Marcel sits down next to him. He smiles at Zachariah.]
MARCEL: What’s your name?
EVAN: Evan.
MARCEL: Didn’t your Mom call you Zachariah?
EVAN: That’s the name she gave me when I was born. She calls it my ‘Christian Name.’
MARCEL: My Mom said she wanted my Christian Name to be Solomon but that was my Dad’s middle name. My Gramma still calls me that though.
EVAN: Mine keeps on introducing me to people as Zachariah. I don’t like that name.
MARCEL: What’s wrong with it?
EVAN: It doesn’t feel like it suits me. It doesn’t suit my personality and it’s too long for me. What do they call you?
MARCEL: That guy who never comes out of his room.
[Evan giggles slightly at his remark.]
EVAN: No really. What’s your name?
MARCEL: Marcel.
EVAN: Isn’t that French?
MARCEL: Probably. Between you and me I’m glad it isn’t a biblical name.
[Starr calls out for her brother.]
STARR: Zachariah! Come and meet our new Pastor!
EVAN: Mom calls. I’ll see you later?
MARCEL: If you’re lucky.
[Evan walks away and the scene changes.]
INT. 6:
That following evening at the KINGSTON RESIDENCE; MARCEL
is sitting at his computer when he is supposed to be doing some
work from the sermon earlier that day. ANNETTE appears.
ANNETTE: Now what are you doing?
MARCEL: I’m playing an online game.
ANNETTE: You’re supposed to be doing your bible study.
MARCEL: I don’t want to do study though.
ANNETTE: Don’t you remember Pastor’s sermon about videogames being the electronic version of Satan? I think he was making a reference to the type of games you play; online.
MARCEL: But Evan’s playing.
ANNETTE: Who’s Evan?
MARCEL: I met him at church. He’s the guy who I was talking to on the church steps.
ANNETTE: His name isn’t Evan. It’s Zachariah.
MARCEL: But he likes to be called Evan.
ANNETTE: That still doesn’t change the fact that his name is actually Zachariah.
[She walks away and the scene changes.]
EXT. 7:
In the TOWN PARK; MARCEL is waiting OUTSIDE on one of the swing sets. He waits for a while until EVAN appears.
MARCEL: I was beginning to think you weren’t going to come.”
EVAN: Getting past my sisters isn’t the easy task on the planet. Either way I’m glad you agreed to hang out with me.
MARCEL: There isn’t a lot of people I can be friends with in this town. It’s interesting not having many people to talk to in a town where everybody knows everybody.
EVAN: I wish my hometown was like that.
MARCEL: What’s your hometown?
EVAN: If it’s alright with you I don’t want to mention its name.
MARCEL: That’s cool. So, what do you like to do for fun Evan?
EVAN: Play online games and that’s pretty much it. What about you?
MARCEL: Bugger all.
EVAN: Hey I have something I want to ask you.
MARCEL: We’ve barely known each other for a day and all of a sudden you want to ask me something?
EVAN: I don’t mean to rush or anything but I need to know what you think of people…
MARCEL: Any specific type of people?
EVAN: What if they weren’t the type of people they appear to be?
MARCEL: You aren’t a murderer are you?
EVAN: I’m not a murderer but based on what I heard yesterday I believe I am a sinner.
MARCEL: You sleep with men?
EVAN: Without jumping to conclusions what do you think of people like that?
MARCEL: If people say that homosexual relationships are wrong then I agree with them.
EVAN: What if they didn’t agree with the gender they were assigned at birth?
MARCEL: Transgender people are more sinful than homosexuals themselves. They’re traitors, like Judas was to Jesus.
EVAN: I’d like to see that before my time is up.
MARCEL: You’ve got nothing to worry about. It may take another seventy years for a change to be made but you’ll be alive to see it.
EVAN: Actually that isn’t quite the case with me.
MARCEL: What are you talking about?
EVAN: I’m actually bald. That’s why I wear a bandage around my head.
MARCEL: Why are you bald? Did your Mom give you a bad haircut?
EVAN: It’s a lot more complicated and devastating than that. When I was little I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and I was in such a bad shape that doctors didn’t think I’d live to be 12. I’m now 20 and it wasn’t until recently that I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
MARCEL: What are those?
EVAN: Cystic Fibrosis is a condition where my lungs fill up with mucus making it hard for me to breathe and Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
MARCEL: Oh. Do you know how long you have to live?
EVAN: I go to bed every night worrying about whether or not I’d wake up to see the day again. They say life is short, but they haven’t met someone like me.
MARCEL: You mentioned something earlier about making a change before your life ends. What was that exactly?
EVAN: All I’ve ever wanted in life was for people to live in a community where nobody is judged for who they are… or for who they love.
MARCEL: I hate to break it to you but there isn’t any way you’re going to get your wish. This town is 110% against people who love their own gender. In fact, I could easily get shunned for having this discussion with you.
EVAN: But how do we know that we’ll get shunned if we don’t at least try to make a stand? All I want is for someone to stand up against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.
MARCEL: Transphobia and biphobia? Now you’re just making up words.
EVAN: That’s the type of oppression I want to abolish.
MARCEL: I’ll tell you what; you can go and rally against those things but I’m used to being accepted rather than neglected.
[He walks away leaving Marcel sitting on one of the swings. He sits down and thinks for a moment before the scene changes.]
INT. 8:
At MARCEL’S HOUSE; MARCEL is trying to do some of his bible study. There is a close-up camera shot of a passage he is reading which is about homosexual couples. He re-reads the passage the Pastor at his church read not long back. While he tries to concentrate on his studies a voiceover of EVAN can be heard.
EVAN: (Voiceover) I’m a sinner…All I want…is for someone to stand up…Against homophobia and biphobia and transphobia…they say life is short… they haven’t met me…
[Evan’s voice begins to get to Marcel. He covers his face with his hands as he is unable to concentrate.]
MARCEL: Evan? Evan is that you?
[The scene switches to outside his room; his mother MARY is walking past with a load of washing when she stops at his DOOR.]
MARCEL: Evan?
[Mary enters his room.]
MARY: Marcel darling, is everything alright?
[Marcel turns to her.]
MARCEL: Mom I think I’m having a mid-life crisis.
MARY: You’re only eighteen. What could you possibly be having a mid-life crisis about?
MARCEL: I think I’m in love with someone.
MARY: How can you tell you’re in love with someone?
MARCEL: When they’re all I can think about. When I feel like I can hear them talking to me directly; that’s how I’m in love with them.
MARY: Really? And who might be the lucky lady you have a crush on if I may ask?
[Marcel becomes hesitant.]
MARCEL: I’d prefer to keep them anonymous. I need to know what I should do to show them I like them.
MARY: Well from personal experience, I can tell you that girls like surprises. For example; if you take her a bouquet of her favourite flowers and surprise her with a walk on the beach or a trip to the movies.
MARCEL: I’ll take your word for it. I have another question; what would you say if I told you I had a friend who liked his own gender?
MARY: You mean a gay person? I’d feel sorry for his parents. People who are homosexual have no place in this world.
MARCEL: What about transgender people?
MARY: Why are you asking these questions Marcel? You’re not a tranny are you?
MARCEL: Mom please don’t use terms like that. They’re terms that oppress transgender people.
MARY: God doesn’t like trans people but he dislikes homosexuals even more. End of discussion.
[She walks away leaving Marcel depressed. The scene changes.]
INT. 9:
The following day at EVAN’S HOUSE; EVAN is watching cartoons on the T.V. STARR enters the LOUNGE.
STARR: Everything going okay in here Zachariah?
EVAN: No it isn’t.
STARR: What’s wrong buddy?
EVAN: Starr, I want to change my name.
STARR: Why do you want to change your name?
EVAN: I like Evan better. Zachariah is a name that doesn’t suit me.
[Starr becomes annoyed.]
STARR: (Aggressively) You want to change your name because you think that Zachariah doesn’t suit you?! That was the name Mother gave you at birth and it took her five months to pick out a name for you and you WANT TO CHANGE IT TO SOME NONSENSE NAME?! I’m sorry Zachariah James, but I cannot allow you to do that. Your name is Zachariah Maguire and you will continue to be addressed as such!
[She exits the lounge also leaving Evan feeling depressed. Having seen everything that just happened MARCEL appears in front of the WINDOW.]
MARCEL: Psst!
[Evan looks up to where he is. He walks over to the WINDOW.]
EVAN: Marcel? What are you doing here?
MARCEL: I have to tell you something.
EVAN: I’ve got nothing to say to you.
MARCEL: Well I have and it’s, I think I love you.
EVAN: You THINK you love me?
MARCEL: Hey don’t get stuck into me. I’ve never felt this type of way before.
EVAN: All I’m saying is that it took you long enough to finally fall in love with me.
MARCEL: It’s odd but I think I want to kiss you.
EVAN: On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the highest; how badly do you want to kiss me?
MARCEL: Eleven. It’s all I want to do now.
[Marcel puts his hand on the side of Evan’s face as a romantic gesture. He pulls himself closer to Evan as Marcel kisses Evan’s lower lip. There is a silent moment between the two for a moment.]
MARCEL: Yes. This feels right.
EVAN: I could say the exact same thing but right now this all feels like a dream…
[The scene switches to in EVAN’S BEDROOM; EVAN enters with MARCEL and they lay on Evan’s bed.]
EVAN: Is that all we’re going to do? Lie on my bed?
[Marcel turns to him and kisses him full-on. They have an intense make-out moment full of gestures such as neck-biting.]
EVAN: You’re really enjoying this aren’t you?
MARCEL: Of course I am my love.
[Their make-out session continues and the scene changes.]
EXT. 10:
Near a LAKE; MARCEL is snuggling up against EVAN while they are lying UNDER A TREE. They are looking out at the lake. Evan is stroking Marcel’s hair.
EVAN: This feels right also.
MARCEL: You’ve got gentle hands. Zachariah, I have to ask you something. Sorry, I meant Evan, I have to ask you something.
EVAN: What would you like to know Marcy?
MARCEL: Are we an official couple or are we just two lazy buggers who spent one night of shagging?
EVAN: Well, I think if things keep on going as they are I think we’re going to have to call ourselves an official couple. If you kiss me however, then I’ll know for sure that we mean business.
[Marcel leans over Evan and gives him another kiss. Evan blushes.]
MARCEL: I’d say we’re officially a couple.
EVAN: I don’t know whether I should say this or not but I freaking love you Marcel Kingston.
[Marcel blushes.]
MARCEL: I love you too Evan Maguire.
[The scene zooms out from EVAN and MARCEL, revealing that there are some people watching the couple enjoying their time in each other’s company.]
EVAN: It might sound like some sort of conspiracy theory but I think this part of town inhabits spies.
[Marcel and Evan get up. They both remain on high alert.]
MARCEL: (Shouting) Whoever’s out there watching us, SHOW YOURSELVES NOW!
[Three people come out of hiding. They all approach Evan and Marcel.]
EVAN: Who are you?
[LAYLA steps forward.]
LAYLA: Do not fear us. We won’t hurt you.
EVAN: (Slightly Confused) Okay? Who are you?
CAMERON: They call us The Outsiders.
BLAKE/STEPHANIE: We’ve been watching you two for the past half hour. But don’t be alarmed, we weren’t stalking you.
MARCEL: For real?
LAYLA: What they’re trying to say is that, we’ve been observing your relationship. You two are from Hindlesbury right?
EVAN/MARCEL: Of course. Why?
BLAKE/STEPHANIE: Hindlesbury is known for its LGBT+ hate comments. They’re transphobic.
LAYLA: And homophobic and biphobic. Basically they treat people who aren’t cisgender or heterosexual like they aren’t valid humans.
CAMERON: They think we’re some type of mentally ill aliens. It’s that firm belief that got us eliminated from that town.
EVAN: That is beyond revolting. If the Bible says for everyone to love their neighbour then that means they should all love people of different gender identities, romantic attractions and sexual orientations.
LAYLA: You two are so brave. You express your love to one another in a community where it’s strictly taboo.
EVAN: I think it’s time for us to be a little more courageous.
[The scene changes.]
INT. 11:
The following day at the HINDLESBURY PARISH CHURCH; the PASTOR is halfway through the sermon. EVAN and MARCEL have attended the sermon with their families. EVAN decides to interrupt the service. He stands up.
EVAN: May I have your attention please?
[The Pastor pauses his sermon.]
EVAN: It has come to my attention that the Bible says “love thy neighbour” as the ninth commandment; thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. When I read a statement like that I automatically think of loving one another rather than being untruthful towards them. What I’m trying to say is; if the word that we all follow says we should love each other as if they were our own neighbours, then doesn’t that mean we should accept them regardless of who they are? Whether they’re black or white, female or male, heterosexual or homosexual? I, Evan Stanley Maguire, stand before you all to reveal that I am a homosexual Caucasian male. I’m not just any ordinary homosexual Caucasian male, but I am a proud and valid human. Thank you for listening.
[Marcel face-palms as the scene changes.]
EXT. 12:
POST-SERMON, OUTSIDE OF THE CHURCH; everyone is still muttering after EVAN’S coming out. EVAN is sitting in his usual spot ON THE STEP. Everyone is trying to avoid him, even Marcel. The scene switches to MARCEL with his family; he is quite a distance from his former flame.
PERSON 1 (Muttering): I can’t believe that boy came out as gay.
PERSON 2: I know. Clearly someone has fallen under Satan’s spell.
[Evan’s sister turns to him. She has a disappointed look on her face. He bows his head in shame. The scene changes.]
INT. 13:
The FOLLOWING DAY IN HINDLESBURY; a lonesome EVAN is walking through a secret passage way which he and MARCEL used. He walks over to the LAKE and sits back down UNDER the TREE. LAYLA appears and sits down next to him.
LAYLA: Judging by the indifferent look on your face I’d say you came out and it backfired?
EVAN: Could that sentence have been structured in a way that didn’t seem too triggering?
LAYLA: I’m sorry kiddo. I really detest the homophobic people. The transphobic people aren’t any better.
EVAN: It’s worse when the person you thought you loved doesn’t support you. I guess Marcel’s just one of them.
LAYLA: I wouldn’t blame him. Strict religious values and heteronormativity can have powerful effects on young peoples’ minds.
EVAN: I thought I loved him. Maybe he was only in this relationship with me because he felt sorry for me.
LAYLA: You know something Evan? I have a strong reason to believe that Marcel still strongly cares about you. If you have a chat to him about his situation then he’ll give you an honest answer.
[Layla leaves Evan with a lot to think about and the scene changes.]
INT. 14:
At MARCEL’S HOUSE; MARCEL is sitting OUTSIDE his HOUSE. EVAN enters.
MARCEL: Shouldn’t you leave?
EVAN: Why should I? Is it so that the man I thought I loved has another chance to be a homophobic moron?!
MARCEL: Evan, I didn’t have a choice.
EVAN: What do you mean you didn’t have a choice?! If you cared about people like me then you would’ve stood up with me. You would’ve stood up with myself and the other outsiders but instead you fell into the trap of homophobia and anti-LGBT.
[Marcel pulls himself closer to Evan.]
MARCEL: You’re right. I should’ve stood by you. I know you want to end this homophobic era we live in. I promise that from now on, I will stay with you. I will fight until you get your wish, for I love you Zachariah.
EVAN: Please…call me Evan and I love you too Marcel.
[They cuddle and have another passionate kiss. Marcel’s Mother MARY catches them performing the homosexual act. She flips out.]
MARY: What on Earth are you doing?!
[Marcel and Evan stop cuddling.]
MARY: I cannot believe this. My own son, my own flesh-and-blood, disobeying the most sacred rule of our God!
MARCEL: Mom, I love this person. Can’t you learn to accept that?
MARY: I’m sorry Marcel, but you are no longer allowed to see Zachariah. You will now leave Zachariah and I am calling your sister!
[Evan leaves and the scene changes.]
INT. 15:
Weeks go by although it seems like months since MARCEL and EVAN have seen each other… A few months later, at one of the CONFESSION BOXES inside the CHURCH; EVAN enters while bowing his head. He takes a deep breath as he enters the box. The scene switches to Evan in the Confession Box.
EVAN: Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I don’t usually do this but I don’t know what to do. All I can do is to confess my sins and have you cleanse me. I’m dying and I need someone to help me.
[Someone opens the door and Evan is dragged by the collar of his shirt. He begins to panic.]
EVAN: (Panicking) Wait, what are you doing?!
[He screams but nobody manages to hear him. The scene fades out and changes.]
EXT. 16:
The scene FADES IN to outside MARCEL’S HOUSE; MARCEL is sitting on his front porch while the people walking past him ignore him in disgust. MARY walks up to him.
MARCEL: I thought you hated me.
MARY: I’m afraid I’ve got some news that you aren’t going to enjoy hearing…
MARCEL: What is it?
MARY: I got a call from Starr this morning. She said that Zachariah passed away early this morning.
[Marcel pauses for a moment. Mary begins to get emotional.]
MARY: (Emotionally) I am so sorry Marcel. I had no idea of how cruel people can be up until now.
[He begins to get emotional and hugs his Mother.]
MARCEL: (Emotionally) I really thought you hated me.
[The scene fades out and changes.]
EXT. 17:
The scene FADES IN to the following weekend; a FUNERAL SERVICE is held for EVAN. It is held down near the LAKE where EVAN and MARCEL would spend their time together. Some of the people attending the service include MARY KINGSTON, LAYLA, CAMERON AND BLAKE/STEPHANIE. There are also a few other attendees from outside of HINDLESBURY. After the moment of silence MARCEL stands up and gets ready to deliver his speech.
MARCEL: Zachariah Stanley Maguire; if I were to describe them in one sentence I’d say, they were a vulnerable human being who wanted nothing more than to be loved and accepted for who they are. You may have known him as Zachariah Maguire, but I knew a different person. I knew them as someone with a kind heart and that their name was Evan Maguire.
[MARCEL, LAYLA, CAMERON AND BLAKE/STEPHANIE begin to get emotional. The scene switches to later that afternoon; MARCEL is standing before Evan’s grave. He is holding a small bouquet of flowers. There is another VOICEOVER from MARCEL.]
MARCEL: (Voiceover) Never have I ever thought that it would come to this day; I never thought that I’d be visiting the grave of someone who was once a close friend of mine. You could say we were best friends, perhaps even lovers. But now I stand in front of the grave of Evan Maguire who was taken away so young. I will miss you Evan Stanley Maguire…
[He places the flowers onto Evan’s grave. LAYLA walks up to an emotional Marcel. Layla comforts him.]
LAYLA: You two were outsiders just like us.
MARCEL: They’re in a better place now.
LAYLA: But not with us.
[CAMERON and BLAKE/STEPHANIE walk over to support Marcel.]
BLAKE/STEPHANIE: Things are beginning to quieten down but we shall continue to fight oppression.
MARCEL: Fighting oppression and homophobia was Evan’s last wish…
[They all hug each other and the scene FADES OUT.]
The overall theme of this script is “Love Thy LGBT+ Neighbour.” It is based around the lives of two homosexual people who live in a strictly religious community. It includes homophobia, transphobia, “hidden” LGBT+ characters and even some transgender and transphobia references.
